underemployed. overheated.
enjoying the heat. went north to go hiking with some similarly underemployed folks today, and we ended up sitting around a kitchen table and then a coffee shop table not hiking. ah well.

work is still on the slim side of none, but am trying to stay positive. after all, this is my choice. boundless retail opportunity awaits if i only look.

Monday

1:30pm EST: ooh mountains. passed the round crop fields about 30 minutes ago (just before New Mexico). now it's fairly mountainous -- gorgeous green mountains.

1:00am EST: About to sleep. Koko the dog is sleeping on the bed next to me! Woo hoo! What a cutie -- very sweet and hyper.

Travelling by plane is almost all about the arrival and not at all about the journey. Glad not to be moving. Food was SO good (multi course meal involving lobster and korean food).

7:30am PST: tried looking for Sunol, but couldn't make it out. heart shaped island in big possibly saline lake -- border of CA/NV? Mono Lake?

10:30am PST: Such gorgeous mountains and strange round crops. Got a little nap in and watched "Miss Congeniality" without sound. Pretty much the same as with sound. Soon it'll be Charlotte, NC and then a quick dash to make my connecting flight to Boston, MA. Will I make it?....

Been ages since I flew anywhere. The constant stream of snackins and beverages (bevMo!) makes me happy, tho conflicted, as I'm in the window seat and hate to have to get everyone to move all the time.

homehomehome
aaaaaah. so good to be home and getting back up to speed. still catching up on emails and phone calls, so excuse the brevity/randomness of this thing. saw miz sunbun last night, and tho I'm sad at her imminent departure, it was good to hang out. she too is leaving for the least coast. time to make friends from warmer places... nah, it was really nice to see her, and miz h (whose hair matches her bicycle! -- how cool is that?).

dogdogdog
while visiting the lee's, met up with my first chindogeh, and it might be love. not an easy dog, as they seem (from my one experience) smart, and tend to think of themselves as the alpha dog, but a good companion for active adults. plus, it's that whole internal/cultural exploration thing I'm on.
...

lifelifelife
in retrospect, had a good trip (as in, "it hurts, but it's a good hurt..."). watched my sis receive props for a bit of really hard work, and got a glimpse of her life as an adult (or close approximation thereof). family difficulties proved to be fairly instructive, thanks to the prodding and support by one Mrs. Lee -- a good friend of my mom, and ahead of most of the older koreans I know in her willingness to accept my trying and ungrateful generation. also, amazingly, she looks younger everytime I see her. didn't have time to look for a dorian gray type portrait in her house, but I imagine it's a mix of taking good care and skilled use of beauty products (alas, I'm doomed on both fronts).

my mother seemed more exhausted, but she and my dad have had a bit of a hard few months, so I'm hoping that she finds some ease and is able to accept her ungrateful children as part of life's lessons. and my dad? I dunno. gonna try and take what lucy a. williams, one of chrissy's professors, said to heart. something about not clinging to imagined (or real) grievances, not holding onto anger as a talisman -- as they will consume and destroy you, preventing you from creating real and transformative changes.

so i guess it's one of those things that's good, but not necessarily fun. life gets more complex these days, rather than simpler. I always thought that life was simpler with less, what a crock of shit that is, eh?

olga t
yeah, the spinning disc animation is a bit much, and mebbe she isn't playing the music she used to. but I still remember going to club red when it was at blondies bar and no grill. and if we got there late, we'd be bummed cuz we'd miss hearing olga spin. in that club, finally surrounded by a majority of minorities, i felt like i'd come home.

so check out her site and be nice, alright?

summer
went swimming in sunol this weekend. the sun was hot enough to give off that delish sensation of really sinking into you. and my poor sunstarved body (sf is not like the calif i grew up in...) soaked it up happily. even my wimpy self was swimming all afternoon.

muralismo!
had a good dose of inspiration and such at the precita eyes mural awareness awards dinner. saw diego rivera's pan american unity for the first time.

met judy baca, who is doing amazing work at the forefront of muralism. refreshingly, she is using technology as a powerful tool in her explorations, while fully admitting the difference between digital art and traditional painting. it's so nice to meet artists who can appreciate a good piece of hardware.

roots
feeling relatively korean today (for me).

hung out in the richmond, talked about korean soap operas, family and other shit with a friend. felt very LA as I drove home along the beach with my korean videos and korean groceries. had difficulty communicating to the ajumah at the video store, but she seemed to appreciate my effort -- one free video rental, no exact due date for return! woohoo! I'm in with the *real* koreans! (tho I imagine she also likes the cash I've been dropping to satisfy my new addiction).

then, I called my mom for a recipe for duk-bok-kum -- something that the characters in my soap operas keep eating! if i get it right, mebbe i'll add it to the little list of recipes i've begun...

stopped at the beach long enough to feel/smell/taste the salty ocean air, see the sun begin to set, and wish my dog well.

[or: why i am not a programmer, as much as i like them]

just spent muchmuch too long, trying to figure out why my leetle js pop up box wouldn't work (see entry below). of course it was a tiny oversight. in fact, it was such an obvious detail, that i'm not even gonna cop to it.

sigh. thwarted at geekdom yet again. guess there's something in this that's a lesson about the path rather than the goal. WHATever.

10 minutes
my friend ev-d-beev always had this theory about walking. it's hard to motivate for a WALK, especially now that I am sans dog. so she'd always just go for a ten minute walk. invariably, after ten minutes, you feel better for being out, and walk further. lately, I find that I can't seem to walk without my mo -- it seems sacrilegious somehow. and so i sit in my house, cooped up and not quite depressed enough to do anything about it all.

so i went out, and without any volition on my part, ended up at the dogpark. it was indeed good to get out -- gorgeous weather and all. walked past my friend's friend's motorcycles (there are a couple of them), and some housepainters working on the house where i'd like to reside.

but then i got to the park, and immediately was hit with sadness. tried to sit with it, and found some string to practice my knots with. luckily, mizbleumagoo called, and saved me from certain heartbreak. so i'm gonna be trying the 10 minute theory out more often.

chewing
went to a lecture by Bruce Mau, and in retrospect, save your money and just buy his new book. seems like the man is better with the written word rather than the spoken word.

as was much of his speech, his 43 point manifesto is interesting, but leaves you with [as huan put it] more thought than inspiration. and as bruce put it in his lecture, this point is likely to bite him in the @ss. hopefully, he'll figure out the software [GoLive, in this case] and correct things like this.

so I'm happy to chew on his ideas [certainly, he's got some brilliant work going on], but had to draw pictures to get through his rambling indirect manner. ah well, should I ever be so famous as to be asked to ramble in front of an audience at $20 a head. and certainly, I've my own chaotic webspace to mind, so enough picking on the big guys.

I did get to sit a few seats down from Lucille Tenazas, and she had the cajones to push Bruce toward what could have resulted in a very interesting and lively discussion. Alas, his answer was fairly defensive and formulaic. So much for brilliance. Time for other inspiration, I suppose.

tried very very very hard to ignore work and art by blogging, but blogger kept eating my posts and bleching up error messages. feh. so I just did some painting collage shit, and stopped cuz the hating was stronger than the bubbling. perhaps when I return to it, it will make sense.

also, the power's back, so I should work. really. shit.

creative-shmative
not sure about this art thing. rapidly stealing from my future (don't tell my dad, but it begins with 4, ends with k {*clarification: that's 401K, NOT 4K or 40K or 400K, for those of you thinking that I'd be living large}) to figure out this thing. somewhere between work and art and korean soap operas there must be a life (with money enough to eat and live), right? oh hell. nothing makes sense without the mo. poor me (not really).

hey ewee - am delighted to hear of your simmering, bubbling creative force. that's wonderful.

did check out slantgirl, as below, and *yeah* we do forget the diff between 'broke' and 'poor'. no sooner than I read her than I stumbled across this in Salon about Barbara Ehrenreich taking two years to live as 'working poor' and the related read is tremendously enlightening, horrifying. Survivor's got nothing on this..

ahh-rt
Feeling something coming together with my art -- not sure what, just a good direction. Something is feeling good and organic and all that. Not sure what'll come, but enjoying how pieces seem to be pulling together for me. good nuts and bolts book lent to me by a-me has really clarified things for me (no, I'm not ready for a show, yes, i'm an artist).

ooh, speaking of amy, favorite misquote: Amy Cray is not only the Green Girl Records playa president; she’s also a client. You'll just have to check out her site to see what's my confabulation, and what's real (no actual hairclub members were hurt during this quote).
...

moolahlack
Too bad about the money stress. But recalling the tidbit (watchout, 2 links!) from slantgirl (which I need to read more often, and so should you) -- tho I'm broke, I'm not (yet) poor. Thus is the nature of privilege. Despite my greatly deflated bank account, I'm eminently employable, and can at this point make enough to make ends meet. So I'm trying to remember that things aren't so bad as I FREAKOUT about...

Dontcha just love it when someone puts it to words what's only been bubbling around in your head? And using such nice verbage too.

ook, ok, so back to some semblance of werk, and yes, I am enjoying the weather, thanks (I've got a coupla hours of juice on this powerbook without ac power, so there).

synesthesia
SYNESTHESIA comes from the Greek words syn meaning "together" and aesthesis meaning "perception." Synesthesia is a combined perception, the crossing of two or more senses.
one of those cool words. love the sound and the meaning both. had bits of this, more so when growing up, and my sister seemed more of a true synesthete. her world included a whole set of smells and associations that the rest of us didn't get. me it was mainly this intense love for purple -- a good deep rich gorgeous purple could have me watering at the mouth, smelling grapes and strangely, seeing the shape of the number "8."
...

meant to say
what brings that tangent was actually just thinking about my lately encounterings with literary and musical types. and synergy was just, well, the dotcom revolution made sure to kill that word (and how).

always envied musicians' ability to just get together and create together. probably what drew me to murals in the first place -- at best, it can be a jamming of artists and community (at worst, it's still better than slinging lattes). and then there are words. not sure I "get" poetry (but am planning on making the poets I know explain it to me -- they are, afterall, wordsmiths, no?). but love words and books and occassionally "get" it. Dorothy Allison, for instance. Or Maya Angelou. Or Milan Kundera. Or Alice Walker. Or Anchee Min.

...ok, so I occassionally get poetry.

which actually reminds me, I need a good book. any suggestions?

hanging
just spent an evening hanging off of impossible heights (for me, anyway) with mr.j. what better than overcoming phobias while hanging out with friends? miz.g popped by and took some photos, so if you see her, make sure to drop her camera a few times.

tho i'm about to be in huge pain (can you say tiger balm?) and the stress is still present (urgh urgh), the endorphin rush has me all blissed out (not to mention a carnitas taco with radishes and spicy carrots).

when i got to the rock climbing gym thing, it was pretty daunting. i figured i'd last about 30 minutes, and then sneak home. instead, i'm hooked. not like it wasn't absolutely frightening. trusting rope over gravity wasn't what i'd call easy. there were moments when i my mind started screaming at me (you know the routine: "WHADDAFUCK!?!"), and, all-in-all, I swore a bit more than necessary. but it was a hell of a good time.
